As far back as I can remember, my mother gave me the chore of handling our family’s recyclables. My job was to separate the plastics, aluminum, and glass products and take them to the curb for the recycling trucks to come pick them up. In comparison with my other tasks, I never seem to mind this one as much. The thought of filling up two trash cans full of recyclables every week motivated me, because I knew if I didn’t do anything about it, they would all end up in the landfill somewhere. This habit still sticks with me, twenty-five years later. Our entire family, including my husband and two toddlers all participate in our community recycling program. Once a month we take our three garbage cans full of plastic, aluminum, glass and paper to our local recycling center. If I can encourage and teach my children the importance of recycling and help keep mother nature beautiful, I know the earth will be a better place for my children and grandchildren to live.
